Fireworks and grilling are common activities in July, but accidents can lead to fire and smoke damage. Tragically, fireworks can not only cause structural damage, but injuries and even loss of life. Eight people died and over 12,000 were injured in 2017 due to fireworks-related incidents (CPSC, 2017). Of course, children should always be closely supervised, especially when around fireworks. In 2018, children below 15 years old made up 36% of the estimated 9,100 fireworks-related injuries (NFPA, 2021). Just as one should be cautious with fireworks, the same goes for grilling. From 2014-2018, children under five accounted for roughly 39% of contact-type burns per year (NFPA, 2021). While injury and loss of life are chief concerns, property damage is another possibility. In 2014-2018, there were 3,900 structure fires involving grills (NFPA, 2021). Hopefully you stay safe this summer while enjoying fireworks and grilling.
